Fun book, but much bigger than I expected. Too big for toddler hands to turn by themselves without a potential tear. I'd purchase it again, just wish I fully understood the size.
He can now name several of the train departments.and practically knows the book by heart. My son loves all kinds of books, but this one became an instant classic in our house as soon as I read it to him. I bought the book based on the reviews here, and neither one of us are disappointed. It's a simple book, with simple text, but it is clearly a favorite with my boy. And what mom wouldn't love THAT.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Which makes this book more valuable because you can read it again and again and notice different details every time.
This book is kind of boring but I can see its appeal to the younger generations through its repetition and beautiful colors and simple drawings. Freight Train is a very simplistic book that incorporates many colors, shapes, and different cars.
This book has a lot of little details that a reader might not notice the first go around reading. Crew uses patterns to guide the reader through the book's story.
Crew's use of white space in the book also really helps to push you through the book and increases your interests in the progression. A very delightfully designed book with many simply ideas that encourage very in-depth thoughts.
I believe this book is a great book for both children and adults.
I've read this book to my Kindergarten students and my toddler grandchildren. It is very popular with both. Although it could use more text, when read with expression (and train/speeding sounds, etc)., it can be a very exciting book that children will want read to them over and over. In addition, it helps children learn their colors.
No biggie. What I would normally call "that one part, the bucket segment, the car that holds stuff that looks like coal" is also known as the "hopper car." This however is not to be confused with the lower more box-shaped version that also seems to carry coal, called the gondola car. After that, the picturebook shares action verbs and locations where the train goes. When I originally read it, I assumed it had been published within the last few years. Freight Train.
This book is from the 1970s. Am I just confused. (1978). Then I noticed the Caldecott Honor medal on the front of the book.
The illustrations lend themselves to having students name the different colors and shapes. Are the other cars not holding coal. So, when I saw the striking colors of the train and it's smoke, I just assumed it was accomplished with recent technology. Which triggered a whole, "why haven't I seen this book before" line of questioning. I don't know.
Crews, D. Young readers will probably be entertained by the blurred colors of the train cars in motion and of the varied color of the smoke. I must admit, I learned a bit about the different names of the train cars. Not to forget the tender car--which is located where I grew up thinking the coal cart went. Sensical. What is the difference among these cars besides shape and size.
